Commander Hoo-Ha Smiles is a recurring character of Camp Lazlo, and the father of Patsy Smiles. He debuted on the episode ''The Weakest Link'' as the main antagonist.

Life

Commander Hoo-Ha is a sadistic muscular bison. He is the leader for both Camp Kidney and Acorn Flats. His appearances brings the whole camp to anxiety, as they are often accompanied by pain and suffering. Hoo-Ha is the only one that can cause Scoutmaster Lumpus to shape up, largely out of fear of punishment due to his negligence. It seems that he doesn't know Slinkman's name because keeps calling him "Slugman", which Slinkman tries too unsuccessfully correct. Similar to Lumpus, he does not seem to know or care what a platypus is and refers to Edward as 'some sort of beaver-duck'. Hoo-Ha is also seemingly on good terms with Ms. Mucus of the Squirrel Scouts, who shares his similar aggressive disposition.

Hoo-Ha is shown to have deep-seated aggression and anger issues. He always speaks in a loud booming voice and reacts to most things with threats of violence. He once mentioned that he attends "court ordered" anger management classes and is shown to listen to relaxing therapy videos to calm his anger, although he was shown to quickly regain his anger at the smallest inclination. Hoo-Ha is shown to literally muscle his way around Camp Kidney, including throwing Lumpus out of his own cabin and breaking down walls to feel more comfortable.

Hoo-Ha's daughter is Patsy Smiles of the Squirrel Scouts, and Hoo-Ha is highly protective of her, sometimes to the point of violence. She appears to be the only thing Hoo-Ha treats with any leve of love and care, which extends to "friendly" sparring sessions. Hoo-Ha supposedly has a son as well, as Patsy mentioned a younger brother, although they were never seen or mentioned by Hoo-Ha himself.

Trivia

  • Hoo-ha's name means an "uproarious commotion" and comes from the military exclamation "Hoo-Ha" (or "Hoo-rah").
  • Whenever Hoo-Ha gets angry, he rips his shirts/clothes.
  • Hoo-Ha's wife is never shown, but being Patsy's Dad implies that she is a Mongoose.
  • Hoo-Ha featured two different designs throughout the course of Camp Lazlo. His original appearance which lasted from Season 1 up to Season 2 in episode Handy Helper was very simplistic, with a square jaw and lacked details aside from a single tuft of hair on his chin. Later in late Season 2 episode Tomato Paste, Hoo-Ha's was redesigned to have a more detailed appearance, with many loose tufts of hair running down his cheeks and a more angular jaw.
  • Hoo-Ha's military standing is a fictional composite of existing ranks. His name and behavior suggest that he was once a marine. The insignia on arm reveals him to be a staff sergeant, but his title, Commander, is a rank in the Navy; the insignia on his chest is that of a three-star general, also known as a Lieutenant General. He drives a vehicle which sometimes resembles a Jeep and other times looks like a Humvee, license plate number "Hrumph", (an angry grunt or snort), decorated with flags bearing a single star, which is the insignia of a general. He was voiced by Jeff Bennett impersonating the late R. Lee Ermey, a former marine drill instructor who gained infamy performing as military figures in cinema and television.
  • The fact he is court mandated to go to anger management therapy heavily implies Hoo-Ha got arrested for some kind of public fight; due to his anger issues, it's not impossible Hoo-Ha flipped out over something that was a minor inconvenience.
